In the first quarter of 2025, the top news and magazine applications on the Android platform in New Zealand showed diverse performance trends. According to data from Sensor Tower, these apps varied significantly in terms of downloads, active users, and revenue.

X (Formerly Twitter) from X Corp. demonstrated a dynamic performance. Weekly revenue saw a gradual rise, peaking at about $1.6K towards the end of February. Downloads fluctuated, with a notable increase mid-quarter, reaching approximately 1.6K in early February. Active users experienced a decline, from around 79.6K to 67.7K by the end of March.

Substack saw a steady increase in downloads, beginning the quarter with 455 and climbing to 720 by March's end. Its active user base, however, showed a decline from 6.2K to 5.7K during the same period.

RNZ experienced a modest download growth, starting at 239 and peaking at 354 downloads in early March. Active users remained relatively stable, fluctuating slightly around 12.5K to 14K throughout the quarter.

BBC: World News & Stories saw significant increases in downloads, starting at 88 and reaching 410 by mid-March. Active users also increased, ending the quarter at approximately 7.9K.

Lastly, GeoNet experienced varied download numbers, with notable spikes in late January and March. Active users fluctuated, with a peak of 4K at the start of the quarter, dropping to 2.7K by the end.
